Africa’s Motor Sport Leaders Join ‘FIA for All’ Campaign

Leading figures from across African Motor Sport Join Graham Stoker’s team

19 November 2021: FIA for All, the campaign led by FIA Presidential Candidate Graham Stoker, has welcomed the involvement of a number leading figures from African motor sport.

Surinder Thatthi has been chosen to continue as Vice President for Sport for Africa, a position he has held for three mandates since 2009. A former champion co-driver in International and African rallying, Thatthi was elected President of the FIA Confederation of African Countries in Motor Sport (CACMS) in 2000, a position he continues to hold today. He has also worked as an FIA Steward in Formula 1, WTCC, WRC and Regional Rally Championship events in Europe, Middle East, Asia Pacific and Africa.

Thatthi’s Deputy for the Africa region will be the well-known African Rally Driver Alain Ambrosino, President of Fédération Ivoirienne de Sport Automobile (FISA), who won the African Rally Championship three times and the WRC Round Rallye Cote d’Ivoire. He is also a Member of the FIA Cross Country Commission.

Amina Mohamed, who is Kenya’s Cabinet Secretary for Sports, Heritage and Culture and was integral to bringing the Safari rally back to the FIA World Rally Championship, will also have a prominent role in the team. She was previously Cabinet Secretary (Minister) for Foreign Affairs and International Trade, the first woman to hold this position in Kenya, and in 2016 was named Woman of Distinction of the Year.

Christian Gakwaya, President of the Rwanda Automobile Club, will have a significant role in the development of motor sport across Africa. He has already led the creation of a plan to boost motor sport across the region through strengthening the foundations for future events, developing commercial partnerships, and creating long-lasting legacy projects.

Surinder Thatthi said: “I’ve worked alongside Graham for the past 12 years and I have full faith in his abilities to lead the FIA. He has been a long-time supporter of motor sport in Africa and we’ve already achieved so much together. I’m looking forward to accelerating this progress in the coming years.”

Amina Mohamed said: “I worked closely with Graham as we successfully brought the Safari Rally Kenya back to the top level of rallying and it will be great to join him again as we look to revolutionise every area of motor sport. Graham is a modern thinker and a very capable leader, and I’m very happy to be part of his team.”

Christian Gakwaya said: “There’s a huge passion for motor sport in Africa and we must create an environment where anyone with an interest in participating in the sport can do so whether that’s as a driver, engineer or volunteer. I believe that under Graham Stoker’s vision and leadership we can achieve this.”

Graham Stoker said: “Its an exciting time for motor sport in Africa, and Surinder, Amina, Alain and Christian have been the driving forces behind much of that good work. I can’t wait to see what we can achieve together in developing motorsport in Africa and across the world in the years ahead.”
